Art Appelberg B.Sc., MBA President and Broker
Art Appelberg has over 28 years of experience in banking, accounting, credit risk and mortgage origination and lending. He has served as Senior Financial Analyst and Manager of Commercial Card Products with Scotia Bank. Art became an independent mortgage agent in 1989 and established Northwood as its Broker in 1990. Since then, Art has grown Northwood to one of the premiere full service mortgage brokerages in Canada.
Steve Kates Vice President and Director of I.C.& I. Division
With over 30 years of commercial and residential lending experience, Steve Kates leads the industry in knowledge and experience. He is highly respected and has served as a consultant and founding broker member for Maple Trust. Within Northwood, Steve has assembled a highly competent team of commercial mortgage professionals with the expertise of structuring and placing almost any commercial mortgage.
Allan Kates B.Econ., CSC Director of Sales
Allan brings a wealth of knowledge in the financial planning, insurance and mortgage brokering/lending industries. With an advanced degree from Western and a marketing diploma from Humber, he brings a strong strategic view to all facets of operations at Northwood. In his previous roles, Allan was responsible for dramatic sales improvements in the financial services companies that he helped manage.
Nick Knezic B.Comm., MBA Commercial Mortgage Manager
Nick Knezic comes to Northwood Mortgage after 17 years with the Business Development Bank of Canada where he held the positions of Branch Manager, Area Manager and Managing Partner. He is highly experienced in all aspects of commercial, industrial and sub-debt lending. Nick also teaches marketing and finance courses at Seneca College in Toronto.
Jeff Greenberg – Director of Human Resources
Jeff is a dynamic, entrepreneurial and results-oriented professional with 14+ years in the Finance and Accounts Receivables industry and extensive experience in Retail, eCommerce and Business Operations. He is a strong and energetic team leader with a solid track record of success in New Business Acquisition, Accounts Receivable/Collections, New Hire Recruitment, Training and Sales.
John Klotz – BA, CFP, CLU, CH.F.C, RHU, TEP. President, Northwood Mortgage Life Insurance Corporation.
John is a graduate of the University of Toronto (BA), the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning (Toronto), a Chartered Life Underwriter, A Chartered Financial Consultant, a Registered Health Underwriter, and a Trust and Estate Practitioner through the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (London, England). He is a Certified Member of the Financial Planners Standards Council in Canada and a member of Advocis, formerly the Canadian Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. John has over 16 years experience in the Financial Services industry. He is President of Northwood Mortgage Life, a company dedicated to the financial planning requirements of Northwood Mortgage clients. The focus is on both from their risk management (insurance) and wealth creation (Making Your Mortgage Tax Deductible).
John is a much sought after public speaker regarding his area of expertise, mainly financial planning. He is chair and founder of Toronto Talks (www.torontotalks.com) a successful monthly speaking series featuring experts in and around the GTA. He is consistently recognized as one of the industries more forward thinking financial advisors.

In his spare time, John spends as much time as possible with his wife Karen and their two young children.
